Without question the Bible is the most influential document of Western Civilization. It can be found almost anywhere in the civilized world, having been translated into more than 2000 different languages and dialects. It is also the world's most popular book with more copies being sold than any other publication. The number of sales is increasing. The Bible is also one of the world's oldest books. Its oldest sections were probably handed down orally from about 1200 years before the birth of Christ. Even its newest sections of the Old Testament were written several centuries before the birth of Christ.

It may truly be said that the influence of the Bible has for nearly two millennia maintained a deep hold on western civilization. This is even true today for the secular-minded person who doesn't consider the Bible to be God's Words. However, even though the Bible is appraised by many to be the most important book of wisdom there is, it is also the most misunderstood. This is because the Bible is given to us on three different levels, that of the physical, that of the soul, and that of the spirit. It appeals to many differing levels of maturity and understanding.

The Bible was written by "initiates", Human Beings who developed higher degrees of consciousness. We have, for the most part, lost the meaning of "initiate", and the "mystery wisdom" has come down to us in traces only. The early initiates were recognized because Human Beings in Biblical times had a kind of dim clairvoyant consciousness which enabled them to experience the realities of a spiritual world, which they then imparted to others.

Initiate consciousness did not altogether disappear. It is beginning to emerge from its time underground through various cultural movements, most notably for the West, through the spiritual science of Rudolf Steiner. In our studies we will be assisted by a group of religious teachers who have been inspired by this spiritual research. These teachers have all devoted their lives to understanding the Bible as ministers of the Word with a combination of faith and intelligence. They have been initiated into many of the mysteries of the Bible. They include Edward R. Smith, Georg Kuhlewind, James Hindes, Valentin Tomberg, Rudolf Frieling, and Emil Bock.
